Kapurthala youth ‘murdered’ on US ‘donkey route’

Chandigarh:Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira has asked Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to take up the case of Sunil Kumar, a resident of Nadala village in Kapurthala, with the Ministry of External Affairs. Kumar was allegedly murdered by human traffickers in a Colombian jungle after he sustained injuries on the “donkey route” to the US.

In a letter to the CM, Khaira said the youth left home on April 24 after local travel agents promised to get him settled in the US. These agents — Jasvir Singh and Harjinder Kaur of Tandi Dakhli village and Suraj of Jalandhar — had charged Rs 20 lakh.

Subject :- Request to take up the death/murder of Sunil Kumar at the hands of human trafficking gang in the jungles of Columbia with Smt. Sushma Swaraj MEA, GOI and stringent action against responsible travel agents. (Photos attached alongwith)

Dear Capt. Amarinder Singh ji,

I am pained to inform you that Sunil Kumar s/o Davinder Kumar resident of VPO Nadala district Kapurthala has been reportedly killed by gang of human traffickers in the jungles of Columbia, while on way to USA border illegally. The said boy was taken from his home on 24th of April 2018 on a promise to settle him in USA. The local travel agents involved in misleading the family and charging them Rs. 20 lacs to reach USA are Jasvir Singh s/o Gurdev Singh, Harjinder Kaur w/o Gurdev Singh both resident of V. Tandi Dakhli PO Ibrahimwal and Suraj alias Leo resident of Jalandhar.

I was informed by his family today morning that he sustained serious injuries on his leg while being taken through the jungles of Columbia through a root called “donkey”. There are many other boys belonging to Punjab who were part of this group being taken by human traffickers to the USA border. They have sent pictures of his injured leg and his dead body to the family, stating that since Sunil Kumar could not walk any longer, he was killed by his captors i.e. human trafficking gang.

There is a lot of resentment in my constituency over the alarming death of Sunil Kumar and the family is in state of shock, looking for justice. I am saddened to state that the family has not only lost a son but have also been fleeced of Rs. 20 lacs by the accused travel agents and there is no scope of his body being traced either.

Therefore, I would request you to take up the case of murder of Sunil Kumar with the Minister of External Affairs GOI, so that his body can be traced and brought back to his family. I also demand that stringent action be taken against the unscrupulous travel agents, who exploited the family of the victim Sunil Kumar and ultimately landed him in the jaws of death.

I also wish to remind you of your electoral promise to enact a law to legitimize the issue of immigration to different parts of the world. You had promised to disband the entire illegal travel agents paraphernalia in Punjab and had suggested to set up a department, that would help our youth to migrate legitimately.

I hope justice would be rendered in the above stated case.

With regards,
Sukhpal Singh Khaira,
LoP
